Swim Lesson Levels

Parent & Child

This class requires an adult in the water with the child for all classes.

Recommended Age: 6 months to 3 years

​

Instruction Area: Rec Pool

Pre-Requisite Skills: None

​

Course Objectives: Familiarize children with the water and teach swimming readiness skills, as well as provide safety information for parents and teach techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water.

Preschool 1

Recommended Age: 3-5 years

Instruction Area: Rec Pool

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful demonstration of the Parent & Child exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Familiarize children to the aquatic environment and help them acquire rudimentary basic aquatic skills, as well as help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices in and around water. Will learn to blow bubbles and allow water on face. Skills may be performed with support.

Preschool 2

Recommended Age: 3-5 years

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful demonstration of the Preschool 1 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Build on and improve skills learned in Preschool 1, as well as increase knowledge of water safety topics introduced in Preschool 1. Will learn to submerge face in water. Skills may be

performed with assistance.

Preschool 3

Recommended Age: 3-5 years

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful demonstration of the Preschool 2 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Increase proficiency and build on the basic aquatic skills learned in Preschool 1 and 2, as well as reinforce water safety concepts and skills introduced in earlier levels. Will learn to fully submerge whole head in water. Skills are performed independently.

Level 1

Recommended Age: 5+

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful demonstration of the Preschool 3 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Orient participants to the aquatic environment and help them gain basic aquatic skills, as well as help participants begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.

Level 2

Recommended Age: 6+

Instruction Area: Lap Pool

​

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful demonstration of the Level 1 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Build on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Will independently swim front crawl and elementary backstroke. Treading water is introduced.

Level 3

Recommended Age: 7+

Instruction Area: Lap Pool

​

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful completion of the Level 2 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Build on the skills learned in Levels 1 and 2 to help participants achieve basic water

competency in a pool environment. Scissors kick and diving are introduced.

Level 4

Recommended Age: 8+

Instruction Area: Lap Pool

​

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful completion of the Level 3 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Improve participants’ proficiency in performing the swimming strokes that were introduced in Level 3. Diving and treading water are continued. Back crawl, breaststroke and sidestroke are introduced.

Level 5

Recommended Age: 9+

Instruction Area: Lap Pool

​

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful completion of the Level 4 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Help participants refine their performance of all six swimming strokes (front crawl, back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke). Flip turns are introduced.

Level 6 –Fitness Swimmer

Recommended Age: 10+

Instruction Area: Lap Pool

​

Pre-Requisite Skills: Successful completion of the Level 5 exit skills assessment

​

Course Objectives: Refine strokes so participants can swim them with greater efficiency and effectiveness over longer distances. Curriculum focuses on the fitness swimmer. Participants will swim the Cooper 12 minute swim test on the first and last day of class, as well as tread water for 5 minutes.
